Construction spending
during February 2018 was estimated at a seasonally adjusted annual rate (SAAR) of
$1,273.1 billion, 0.1% (±1.2%)* above the revised January estimate of $1,272.2
billion (originally $1,262.8 billion); consensus expectations
were for +0.3%. The February figure is 3.0% (±1.5%) above the February 2017 SAAR
of $1,235.7 billion; the not-seasonally adjusted YoY change (shown in the table
below) was +3.7%. During the first two months of this year, construction
spending amounted to $176.3 billion, 4.4% (±1.3%) above the $168.9 billion for
the same period in 2017.
* 90% confidence interval includes zero. The
U.S. Census Bureau does not have sufficient statistical evidence to conclude
that the actual change is different from zero.

Private Construction
Spending
on private construction was at a SAAR of $982.0 billion, 0.7% (±1.6%)* above
the revised January estimate of $974.8 billion.
- Residential: $533.4 billion, 0.1% (±1.3%)* above the revised January estimate of $532.9 billion;
- Nonresidential: $448.6 billion, 1.5% (±1.6%)* above January’s $441.9 billion.
- Residential: $533.4 billion, 0.1% (±1.3%)* above the revised January estimate of $532.9 billion;
- Nonresidential: $448.6 billion, 1.5% (±1.6%)* above January’s $441.9 billion.
Public Construction
Public
construction spending was $291.1 billion, 2.1% (±1.6%) below the revised
January estimate of $297.4 billion.
- Educational: $74.6 billion, +0.5% (±2.6%)*;
- Highway: $88.5 billion, -0.2% (±5.4%)*.
