Construction
spending during June 2017 was estimated at a seasonally adjusted annual
rate (SAAR) of $1,205.8 billion, 1.3% (±1.5%)* below the revised May estimate
of $1,221.6 billion (originally $1,230.1 billion); consensus expectations
were for a 0.5% increase. The June figure is 1.6% (±1.8%)* above the June 2016 SAAR
of $1,186.4 billion; the not-seasonally adjusted YoY change (shown in the table
below) was +1.2%. During the first six months of this year, construction
spending amounted to $577.0 billion, 4.8% (±1.3%) above the $550.5 billion for
the same period in 2016.
* 90% confidence interval includes zero. The
U.S. Census Bureau does not have sufficient statistical evidence to conclude
that the actual change is different from zero.

Private Construction
Spending
on private construction was at a SAAR of $940.7 billion, 0.1% (± 1.2%)* below
the revised May estimate of $941.3 billion.
- Residential: $502.9 billion, -0.2% (±1.3%)*;
- Nonresidential: $437.8 billion, +0.1% (± 1.2%)*.
- Residential: $502.9 billion, -0.2% (±1.3%)*;
- Nonresidential: $437.8 billion, +0.1% (± 1.2%)*.
Public Construction
Public
construction spending was $265.1 billion, 5.4% (±2.6%) below the revised May
estimate of $280.3 billion.
- Educational: $67.5 billion, -5.5% (±3.9%);
- Highway: $82.4 billion, -6.6% (±6.7%)*.
